Individual Therapy

Outpatient individual therapy services can help people overcome obstacles to their well-being. It can increase positive feelings such as compassion and self-esteem. Therapy is a place where you can learn skills for handling difficult situations, making healthy decisions and reaching goals. Some common issues that individual therapy can assist with are depression, anxiety, grief, loss, family issues, stress, stabilization of mood,  procrastination, anger and relationship issues.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the most popular and effective types of therapy. This approach helps people look at the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Then, people can replace negative thinking patterns with positive ones. The belief behind CBT is that healthy thoughts often promote positive feelings and productive actions. 


Other effective approaches include:

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) can help people cope with stress, improve emotional regulation, and work on relationships.


Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) can help build relationship skills.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) can increase awareness of thoughts and emotions using mindfulness strategies, along with commitment and behavior-change strategies, to increase emotional regulation and consciousness of actions.

Psychodynamic therapy can help people understand unconscious experiences and how the past influences present behavior. 

Individual therapy sessions often last from 30 to 60 minutes. How often sessions occur and how long they are depend on many factors, including:

  • The amount of time the person in therapy has been experiencing the issue

  • How much distress the issue causes

  • How quickly the person in therapy improves

Couples Therapy

Couples therapy focuses on improving relationship satisfaction and conflict resolution between partners. The ultimate goal for a therapist is to help build a healthy relationship by helping couples find effective tools and techniques to improve communication, develop conflict resolution skills and correct negative behavior patterns, while focusing on positive aspects of the relationship.

  • During Couples therapy an important component to positive relationship building can include exploring your past, which can lead to a better understanding of your fears, motivations, and behaviors in a relationship. It can also help address unresolved conflicts that affect you in the present.​

 

  • Roles in the relationship, beliefs and values, finances, spending quality time together, children, familial relationships, sex and intimacy, health issues, physical or mental health illnesses and external stressors can affect the relationship. While in couples therapy, you and your partner can gain coping skills and techniques to improve relational satisfaction and communication.

Domestic Mediation

Domestic Mediation is a positive alternative to having the courts make decisions for you regarding children, finances, and other decisions during the divorce process. Mediation is voluntary and requires that both parties meet with a neutral mediator to work cooperatively toward a mutually agreed settlement. In facilitative mediation, the most common type of alternative dispute resolution, the mediator does not act as a judge and does not render a decision or make any recommendation. Instead, the mediator’s job is to maintain complete neutrality while encouraging the parties to move toward a settlement rather than going to court.

 

Dealing with decisions surrounding a divorce can be complicated, overwhelming and stressful. Where litigation often tears families apart, mediation works to maintain and improve relationships through communication. Often times in the battle of divorce the child(ren) are overlooked.  However, mediation brings focus to the best interest of the child and works with parents to comprise a mutually beneficial and workable agreement.
